What Paint Calculator does
A paint calculator that determines how much paint is needed to cover a room’s walls and ceiling. Users enter room dimensions, ceiling area, and the combined area of doors and windows that will not be painted. The tool then calculates the net paintable area, multiplies by the number of coats, and divides by the selected paint’s coverage rate to show exact gallons required. An optional allowance percentage can be added before the result is rounded up to whole containers, and the remaining excess after whole cans is displayed. The interface supports both US and metric units and includes a transparent calculation breakdown that references coverage rates from the selected paint label.

- 4
Select the number of coats and the paint’s coverage rate per gallon, then click Update estimate to see gallons needed and whole-can purchase amount
Best for
Homeowners or DIYers planning a single-room paint project who want a quick estimate of gallons and whole cans needed before buying supplies.
Limitations
- Coverage rates are estimates and vary by surface texture and color change
- Actual paint needed may differ based on application method and product specifications
- Room dimensions are required; the tool does not support irregularly shaped spaces without manual adjustments
Paint Calculator FAQ
- Can I calculate paint for multiple walls with different dimensions?
- Yes, enter the overall room length, width, and wall height; the calculator uses the perimeter formula 2 × (length + width) × height to find total wall area, then subtracts doors and windows.
- What if I want to paint the ceiling but not the walls?
- Enter the ceiling area in square feet or meters and leave the wall dimensions at zero, or set the wall height to zero and input only the ceiling area.
- How does the extra paint allowance work?
- An optional percentage is applied to the total gallons before rounding up to whole containers, ensuring you have a small buffer for second coats or touch-ups.
- Is the coverage rate of 350–400 ft² per gallon accurate for all paints?
- No, coverage varies by product, surface texture, porosity, color change, and application; the tool lets you input the specific ft²/gal value from your paint label for accurate results.
