What Fence Calculator does
The SmartCalc fence calculator estimates the materials needed to build a residential boundary fence. Users input the total fence length, height, post spacing, and gate count, then select between a wood picket style (vertical boards on rails) or a wire mesh style (chain-link or welded mesh rolls). The tool outputs a detailed list including the number of posts, rails, pickets or mesh rolls, and the required bags of concrete for setting posts. It also provides optional price fields so users can calculate a total cost estimate. The result is delivered as a ready-to-use material list rather than just a formula, helping users plan their project and budget before heading to the hardware store.

Best for
Homeowners or DIY builders planning a straight fence run who want a quick, free estimate of posts, rails, pickets, and concrete needs before purchasing materials.
Limitations
- Designed for straight fence runs, not complex layouts with corners or slopes
- Assumes standard post spacing and concrete setting; actual needs may vary with site conditions
- Prices and concrete bag counts are estimates; local rates and hole sizes may differ
Fence Calculator FAQ
- Can I use this calculator for a fence with corners or a curved property line?
- The calculator includes a gate count field. Enter the number of gates you plan to add, and the tool will factor those openings into the post and rail calculations.
- How many bags of concrete are needed per post?
- The tool defaults to 2 bags of 50 lb fast-set concrete per post, which is the usual residential default, but you can adjust this number in the optional price/concrete bag field if your project requires a different amount.
- What is the difference between the Wood Picket and Wire Mesh fence types?
- Wood Picket calculates vertical boards with a specified width and gap between them, while Wire Mesh replaces the pickets with mesh rolls sized by roll length. Both styles still require the same number of posts, rails, and concrete bags.
