About this tool

What Drywall Calculator does

A drywall calculator that estimates the number of panels needed for walls and ceilings. Users enter the total wall run, wall height, ceiling area, large openings, sheet dimensions, and a cutting allowance to get a sheet quantity based on area. The output shows the gross wall and ceiling area, deducted openings, installed area for one layer, area with allowance, purchased sheet area, and excess after whole sheets. The tool supports both US and metric units and allows selection of 4×8, 4×10, or 4×12 sheet sizes. It provides a transparent calculation formula and editable product assumptions so users can verify the math against their project requirements before purchasing materials.

Step by step

How to use the GQ Calc Drywall Calculator

  1. 1

Measure the total length of wall faces receiving drywall and enter the wall run in feet (or meters).

  2. 2

Enter the wall height to calculate the wall surface area (or leave zero if the ceiling is not included).

  3. 3

Input the ceiling area in square feet (or meters) or set it to zero if there is no ceiling to cover.

  4. 4

Subtract the square footage of large wall openings that will not need drywall.

  5. 5

Select the sheet width and length (e.g., 4×8, 4×10, or 4×12), set a cutting allowance percentage, and click Update estimate to see the panel quantity and area breakdown.

Is it right for you

Best for

Homeowners, contractors, and DIY enthusiasts who need a quick area-based estimate of drywall sheet quantities before starting a room project.

Limitations

  • Results are area-based estimates, not a panel layout plan
  • Orientation, seams, stagger, fire assemblies, and partial-sheet reuse can change the actual order needed
  • The calculator does not account for partial-sheet reuse or complex seam patterns
