Paver Calculator
Free paver calculator counts patio or driveway pavers, sand base and joint sand, with cost estimates for any paver size.

What Paver Calculator does
The Paver Calculator on SmartCalc estimates the materials needed for outdoor paving projects by calculating three components: pavers, a compacted gravel base, and a sand bedding layer. Users enter the patio length and width, paver dimensions, joint width, and a waste percentage to receive results that include paver count, base gravel volume, bedding sand volume, sand bag quantities, and a cost estimate covering both pavers and sand. The tool is designed to prevent under-ordering by accounting for material waste and standard construction practices.
How to use the SmartCalc Paver Calculator
- 1
Enter the patio length and width in meters
- 2
Input the paver length and width in centimeters
- 3
Set the joint width in millimeters and adjust the waste percentage
- 4
Click calculate to see paver count, base volume, sand volume, sand bag quantity, and cost estimate
Best for
Homeowners and DIYers planning a patio or walkway who want accurate material quantities and cost estimates before purchasing supplies.
Limitations
- Results depend on the waste percentage entered by the user
- Base and sand layer thicknesses follow common practice but may need adjustment for driveways or heavy traffic
- Cost estimates require manual input of paver and sand bag prices
Paver Calculator FAQ
- How thick should the paver base be?
- For patios and walkways, a compacted base of 10-15 cm (4-6 in) of crushed stone or gravel is standard. The calculator uses 10 cm for the base volume estimate; add more for driveways or heavy vehicle traffic.
- Do I need joint sand on top after the pavers are set?
- Yes. After the pavers are set, joint sand is swept into the gaps and compacted to lock the pavers together. The calculator includes joint sand volume in its estimates.
- What is the recommended sand bedding thickness?
- The sand bedding layer is typically 2.5 cm thick. Sand bedding thicker than about 3 cm can shift and let pavers settle unevenly; it should be screeded level.
- How is paver waste calculated?
- Users set a waste percentage (default 10%). The calculator multiplies the paver count by (1 + waste percentage) to account for cuts and breakage during installation.
